What Evidence to Save After an AI Scam or Phishing Attack

A practical evidence checklist for AI scams, deepfake fraud and phishing cases, with guidance on how a report can organise the case.

Evidence checklist for an AI scam or phishing case

Preserve before you tidy

Do not delete accounts, chats or apps while you are upset. Deleted material is often unrecoverable, and gaps in a timeline are the first thing a reviewer questions.

The core checklist

A written timeline with dates. Full-screen screenshots showing usernames and timestamps. Exported chat histories. Payment confirmations with reference numbers. Platform URLs and any app store listing. Wallet addresses and transaction IDs for crypto.

Keep original files rather than photos of screens, and store everything in one folder with consistent naming.

Turning material into a case file

An investigation report indexes each artifact, links it to a point on the timeline, and states what can be verified from it. That structure is what makes a claim readable in minutes rather than hours.
